Our Story
Patrick Alès, Pioneer of Botanical Hair Science
Inventor of the Blow-Drying technique
In the 1960s, the world of hairstyling was defined by sophisticated blowouts and sculpted volume. At the heart of this vibrant Parisian scene, Patrick Alès styled some of the world’s most celebrated icons, including Jackie Kennedy and Catherine Deneuve.
While making a name for himself with his scissors, he developed a revolutionary technique: the blowout. More than a styling method, this innovation transformed hairstyling by creating volume, flexibility, and movement through the combined use of a brush and blow dryer.
“Blow-drying frees the hair’s natural movement and reinvents the art of hairstyling.”
Hair Care Powered by Plants
Convinced that nature held powerful benefits for the health and beauty of hair, Patrick Alès began searching for a way to protect the hands of his colleagues, which had been damaged by harsh products.
He created his first natural hair care formulas guided by a philosophy that would remain with him throughout his life: “primum non nocere” — first, do no harm.
Patrick Alès pioneered botanical hair therapy — an innovative approach born from observation and experimentation that brings together science and botanicals to reveal the hair’s natural beauty.
“A philosophy that would stay with him forever: ‘primum non nocere’ — first, do no harm.”
Phyto 7, the First Daily Hair Cream
At a time when the cosmetics industry favored synthetic chemistry, Phyto Paris was already looking in a different direction.
In 1968, Phyto 7 was born: the first daily hair cream formulated with seven plant extracts. This groundbreaking innovation challenged established beauty conventions and introduced a new approach to hair care — a daily cream designed to nourish the hair just as you would care for your skin.
“As early as the 1970s, Phyto Paris embraced the power of plants while the industry was still focused on synthetic chemistry.”
The Creation of the Laboratories
To scientifically demonstrate the effectiveness of plants, Patrick Alès took the next step by establishing his own laboratories.
Botanical research, scientific expertise, and professional standards came together to develop formulas highly concentrated in botanical active ingredients, marking the beginning of an innovative and responsible approach to hair care.
“Botanical science in service of healthy, beautiful hair.”
Phytoplage, Sun Protection for Hair
In 1974, Phyto Paris created Phytoplage, the first hair oil designed to protect hair from the sun, salt, and chlorine. Quickly embraced by celebrities on holiday, it became an essential companion for summers in the sun.
A pioneer in sun protection for hair, Phytoplage helps preserve the hair fiber while revealing its natural shine. Its signature luminous finish creates an effortlessly sophisticated wet look that became emblematic of the 1970s.
“The iconic oil that has protected and enhanced hair under the sun since 1974.”
Phytolaque, the First Hairspray Without Propellant Gas
With Phytolaque, Phyto Paris transformed hairstyling by introducing a hairspray without propellant gas.
A more considerate alternative for both hair and the environment, it combines professional hold with a gentler formulation, remaining true to the philosophy of “primum non nocere” — first, do no harm.
Phytophanère, Beauty From Within
Driven by the belief that beautiful hair also begins from within, Phyto Paris created Phytophanère, a dietary supplement dedicated to supporting healthy hair and nails.
Its unique formula, concentrated with 15 vitamins, minerals, and essential active ingredients, works at the heart of the hair growth cycle to support growth, strength, and vitality.
Pioneering at the time of its launch, this holistic approach combines nutrition, science, and botanicals to reveal beauty from within.
Phytocyane, Advanced Anti-Hair Loss Care
Phyto Paris developed Phytocyane, an anti-hair thinning treatment specifically designed to address the unique needs of women, whose hair loss can often be linked to hormonal changes, stress, or fatigue.
Formulated to act at the heart of the hair growth cycle, the treatment stimulates the scalp, supports hair anchoring, and helps preserve hair density.
A synergy of botanical active ingredients and vitamins strengthens the hair fiber while restoring vitality and shine.
Pioneering Care for Textured Hair
For the first time, Phyto Paris developed a complete range dedicated to curly, coily, and chemically relaxed hair.
Ahead of its time, the brand recognized the individuality of every hair texture and its specific needs.
Formulated with highly nourishing botanical active ingredients, these treatments provide nourishment, softness, and definition while respecting the natural balance of the scalp.
The range provides expert care across the full spectrum of textures — from wavy and curly to coily and kinky hair — helping reveal their natural beauty.
Phytocolor, a New Generation of Botanical Hair Color
With Phytocolor, Phyto Paris reimagined hair color with a formula highly concentrated in botanical pigments, delivering 100% gray hair coverage.
Its formula combines jojoba and monoi oils to nourish the hair with extracts of jujube bark and Epaline™ for their soothing and protective properties.
This synergy of botanical active ingredients helps maintain scalp comfort throughout the coloring process.
